How it works

One board foot is a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long — 144 cubic inches. Board feet equal thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) divided by 12, times the number of boards. Cubic feet are board feet divided by 12.

Frequently asked questions

Are these nominal or actual sizes?

Enter the sizes you are buying. Lumber sold as 2×6 is usually about 1.5×5.5 inches actual — if you need true volume, enter actual dimensions.

What is a thousand board feet (MBF)?

1,000 board feet. Divide your board-foot total by 1,000 to get MBF for pricing.
