How it works
Recommended drag = 1/4 to 1/3 of the line's breaking strength. For 20 lb line that is 5.0 to 6.67 lb. Set it by pulling line off the reel against a hand scale, not by feel alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why not set drag to the full breaking strength?
Knots, abrasion and sudden runs all reduce effective strength. A drag well below breaking strength lets a fish run without snapping the line.
When should I go lighter?
With a light leader, in heavy cover where a fish can wrap you, or for hard-fighting fish that make long runs.
Do I need to re-check drag?
Yes — drag washers change with use, heat and salt. Re-check it before a trip.
