Grade needed on the final

Formula: needed = (desired − current × completed weight ÷ 100) × 100 ÷ final weight. Completed weight and final weight should add up to 100% for a standard course.

How it works

Your overall grade is a weighted average: current grade × its weight, plus final grade × its weight. Working backwards from the overall grade you want gives the final-exam grade you need. With a current grade of 85% counting for 70% of the course and a final worth 30%, reaching 90% overall needs (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.67% on the final — which is not possible, so that target needs a lower goal or a higher current grade first.

Frequently asked questions

What if the weights do not add up to 100%?

The math still runs, but the answer only means what you think it means when completed weight plus final weight equals 100%. Check your syllabus for the exact weights.

What if the answer is over 100%?

It means that target cannot be reached even with a perfect final. The calculator says so plainly rather than showing an impossible number without comment.

What if the answer is below 0%?

You are already at or above the target before the final, so any score keeps you there.
