How it works

Studs are spaced along the wall, so the count is wall length divided by spacing, plus one stud for the far end. Top and bottom plates run the full wall length twice — once on top, once on bottom.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include corners or door openings?

No. Add king/jack studs around openings and extra studs at corners and T-intersections.

16 or 24 inch spacing?

16 inches is the common choice for load-bearing walls; 24 inches is used in some non-load-bearing or engineered walls. Local code and your engineer decide.
