How it works
Take-home pay is what actually lands in your account after tax, not your headline salary. Half of it goes to needs — rent or mortgage, food, utilities, transport, insurance, and minimum payments. Thirty percent goes to wants — eating out, streaming, hobbies, and holidays. Twenty percent goes to savings and extra debt payoff. If your rent share is high, your needs may run over 50% — that is common, and the fix is to trim wants or savings temporarily rather than pretending the numbers fit.
Frequently asked questions
My rent alone pushes needs over 50%. Now what?
That is normal in expensive areas. Keep needs as low as you can, then split what is left between wants and savings instead of forcing the exact 50/30/20 split.
Does debt payoff count as savings?
Yes, in this rule the 20% covers both savings and extra debt payments. Minimum payments, by contrast, count as needs.
