How it works

Essential expenses are the ones you cannot skip: housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance, and minimum debt payments — not subscriptions or eating out. Multiply that monthly figure by the number of months you want covered to get the target. Divide the target by how many months you will take to build it to get the monthly saving needed. Job stability matters: a single income, freelance work, or a shaky industry all argue for more months of cover, while a very stable two-income household may be comfortable with fewer.

Frequently asked questions

How many months should I cover?

Three months is a common starting point; six is a safer standard. Twelve makes sense if your income is irregular or hard to replace.

Should I count my full spending?

No — count essentials only. An emergency fund is for keeping a roof over your head and the lights on, not for keeping every habit going.
